Complications
Addiction: Has an addictive personality; he currently drinks frequently, as well as uses and sales designer drugs (MDMA, LSD, K, MJ) His bottled queer feelings come out the more he's under the influence.
Closted Gay Man
Guilt: Guilt~He blames himself for his parents death. The day of the accident he was angry about their vacation choice, and behaved like a brat. He thinks this distracted his parents when driving, resulting in the accident. Once his powers became manifest, this guilt grew, as he believed that had he had is powers earlier, he could have saved his parents. He works to honor them, to defend those without power, and to eventually explore the world--just like they did.

Motivation: Acceptance: Malak feels different and somewhat isolated from the rest of society; as a super who can't fully control his powers, as a Yemeni descended man-of-color, and as a closeted gay man. He does good to gain the trust and acceptance of others. To gain real friends, and maybe someday a family. Part of him sees his powers as more of a curse than a blessing; trying to do some good with them is a means of resolution.
Motivation: Responsibility: Is fiercely protective of those he cares for; becomes violent if they are threatened.
Power Loss: He has to be in a transformed state to have access to his powers, while this is a free action, he must establish it as such, unless of course he's losing control in some way [see other complications].
Quirk: Has an inheritance he is unaware of
Relationship: with Karrah Davis (friend)
Temper: Has rage issues; can lose control of powers activating when angry

Background

Zareb was the only child born to his loving parents Nimia (Hayyan is her maiden name) and Kaelib Kannan, two internationally acclaimed anthropologists. For most of his formative years, he followed his parents on their journeys around the world, primary bouncing between their homes in London (his father's hometown) and San Francisco, CA (his mother's hometown). He was born in San Francisco, making him an American citizen. While on vacation in his 13th year, him and his parents, caught in a flash rain storm in the mountains of California, were in a terrible car accident; resulting in the death of both of his parents. What Zareb doesn't know, is that he and his parents were the target of a scientist and anthropologist only known as Dr. North. His parents were close to finding some sort of rare artifact, and Dr. North needed them out of the way, for reasons unknown.

Having no known living family members or close family friends, Zareb was tossed into the U.S. foster care system. There was little way for his late father's attorney to find him, and give to him not only his large inheritance, but also a chest (that only Zareb can open) containing family relics and a large golden book, detailing the history of his family.

Some of his experiences in foster care weren't too bad, others were traumatic in their way. By age 16, he found himself in the home of a middle-aged couple in Beaverton, OR. They were fine enough, at least they kept their hands to themselves. Sarah and Eric Thompson worked little, and drank often. For all intents and purposes, Zareb was on his own, and had a bed to sleep in and sometimes food to eat. Other than that, the couple kept to themselves and used a lot of the state given money to feed their various addictions. He found friendship in Karah Davis at school, Beaverton HS, and for the first time in a long time, began to let his guard down, to really let someone in. After coming of age he followed Karah to Portland, where they still live together as roommates at King Court Apartments, just south of the park blocks at Portland State University.

His powers first manifested when he was at a protest event Karah wanted to go to. While there, there was an incident, and Karah became the focus of police intervention. In a moment of rage and panic, Zareb exploded in white fire, knocking the police officers, and his friend, temporarily unconscious. Unknown to Zareb, Destiny saw this incident and worked to cover it up, thinking of tapping him for help when she wanted it.
