Originally, the Thanewall was constructed by the dwarves as a sign of their agreement to help defend the humans and others who settled in the Vale. For a time afterwards, it was given to the settlers to defend the wall themselves, but in time, the dwarves of Hammer Peak took over that task as the first line of defense for the citadels in the mountains. Now, the only passage is through the Great Gate, around which the town of the same name has risen.
