Background

Renja (not his real name or course, these barbaric westerners would mangle it with their clumsy tongues(Ryuunosuke 隆之介)) did not come aboard the ship voluntarily, he was in fact abducted. Whisked away from his family, torn the country he loved, wronged by the oafish westerners. At the tender age of 6 months he was fully aware that he was a Hengeyokai. More specifically he knew his lineage as a Bakeneko. As he was not a full year grown yet, he had an advantage over older Bakeneko in that he did not display any of the traits that marked his people as different yet, unfortunately that also meant he could not shift out of his animal form yet either. On the most unfortunate day that he was abducted and impressed into service as a ship's cat, he had decided to explore the docks of Uwaji with a few kittens, blending in with the locals and such. Unaware of the barbaric custom of snatching up poor unsuspecting kittens and forcing them to live on boats, he was unprepared when he and a few of the other kittens were swooped up by the malformed tengu (Skeksil) and carried off to his ship.
The next six months of his life were both the most frustrating and exciting. While he was stuck as a cat and unable to get home, he was also more intelligent than most of the sailors on board and could get away with much more than your average ship cat. People say things in front of animals they are careful not to say in front of other people. And it's easier to steal from the cook when you can hide your tracks. Renja gradually picked up Common and the Trade Tongue by listening and observing, as well as a few other languages he keeps secret from the crew.
Finally the day came that he reached full maturity and transformed into a fully grown Bakeneko. It was a glorious day! Finally he could do something about his plight! He tried to keep it a secret for as long as he could, but he was not experience enough with shifting yet to maintain his cat form for more than a few hours at a time, and eventually he was caught, he was in the middle of bringing some freshly swiped fish to the other cats when he reverted back to his natural form. The captain thought he was a stow-away at first and was getting ready to toss him overboard when the ship's cats came to his rescue. Crowding around him, hissing and clawing at everyone who tried to get close. This odd behaviour started the crew and it gave Renja a chance to regain his sensibilities and he was able to somewhat explain his presence. He had to point out that one of the ship cats was missing before the captain began to believe him, and after he had rested (under guard, in a locked hold, with ruined fish) he was able to shift into his cat form so that the captain would believe him.
During his time as a cat, he had done his "job" of hunting and stalking rats and other vermin, if for no other reason than to keep his instincts honed. After his first shift he continued to hunt prey, but much larger prey. The only other thing to hunt on a ship besides vermin, is humans and their kind though. That didn't stop Renja. It was not unheard of for a crewman to be going about their work and suddenly hear Renja's voice whispering in their ear "Careless". One time, when the ship had taken on passengers, his game was observed by a Harper bowman who saw how Renja hunted and stalked his prey, but never killed them and saw the potential to be a bounty hunter and protector in Renja. He showed Renja a few tricks and how to use a bow. By the time the ship had reached it's destination, Renja had found a new calling.
Renja stays with the ship in the hopes that it will some day return him to Kara-Tur and to his people, but in the mean time he has kittens to defend and adventures to have.

Description

Age: 4

  • Human
    Height: 5'10"
    Weight: 185 lbs.
Physical Description: Average height and wiry muscled. In his human form Renja looks like an adult human from the country of Wa, with a couple notable exceptions. First off, his hair is silver gray with streaks of black in it. At first glance his green eyes appear to be cat-like, but they do not have the same iris shape as a cat.
  • Hybrid
    Height: 5'11"
    Weight: 195 lbs.
Physical Description: Average adult height human covered in silvery gray fur striped like a Bengal cat. His muscles no longer appear wiry, but have the sleekness and power of a large cat. He still looks very much human in build, except he now has a feline face and head. His fingertips are darker than his fingers, and his nails are harder and seem to come to a blunt point. His green eyes are fully cat-like in this form.
  • Cat
    Height: 12.5"
    Weight: 15 lbs.
Physical Description: A very healthy member of the feline species, sleek and fast, he looks like a silver Bengal cat in this form. If it wasn't for the two tails and knowing look in his eyes, he could be mistaken for any other ship cat. Perhaps better fed than most.

Forms

Change Form You can transform to your Human Form, or Animal Form. You can use this feature once. At 3rd level, you may use it twice, and at 6th level you may use it three times, regaining the uses after a short or long rest. Your Hybrid Form is considered your "true" form in which you have a humanoid body but the face of your animal. You can revert to your true form at will. Each form has a set appearance based on the individual (a hengeyokai cannot choose to take the shape or form of another person or animal in order to disguise himself). The mechanics of transforming to your Animal Form works the same as the Druid feature Wild Shape except limited to your chosen animal.
