Background
My name is Merfi and I am a child of the Force. Am I a Jedi? Yes. I belong to that ancient order. But my allegiance is and has always been to the Force, not to Masters too concerned with politics and matters best left to others. The order served me as a launching point, helping me master and focus my skills and I have met many an ally amongst their ranks, though I have always remained wary of the conflict and corruption within the ranks of the order as well - especially where too many congregate in one place among cities of "civilized folk". It often seems to become less about serving and learning from the Force and more about power.
The Force guided me to the order when I was young, though too old for training as a youngling. The order turned me away. I did not give up, I knew where I was meant to be as the Force had guided me to the Jedi - I was skilled in the Force, even at my age I had a grasp of things far beyond most padawans in the order who had trained for years - my connection was strong, I simply needed the guidance to fine tune it. I followed the path I was meant to follow, and I found "willing" teachers among the order, those too far separated to know I was an unsanctioned student sent to learn from them. I was padawan to two Jedi Knights, neither of whom was aware I'd not actually been sent by the Order. My third teacher discovered my ruse and I was brought before the order. They questioned me, they tested me, the admonished me, but in the end, they made me padawan and the teacher who had turned me in requested I be assigned to her. In time I passed my trials and became a Jedi Knight. Then I left. The Force called me to leave their temples and trivial affairs and travel, far and wide to where it deemed I was needed. The Jedi did not need me - the galaxy did.
Once or twice in five decades I have had dealings with the larger order - once I was summoned to aid in a conflict, something I am not generally fond of becoming involved with, but there were innocent locals that had become involved and so I agreed, but only as a medic and healer in the conflict in order to ease the suffering of those caught in the crossfire until the situation could be remedied. Another time I was shockingly assigned a padawan of my own. Turns out it was my old mentor who had advised the council that I would be a good teacher. She was a pleasant mon calamari youth named Brenquiss with a talent for finding lost things and sensing danger well before they were apparent. We traveled together, researching the ancient Jedi, Sith and other Force user sites and artifacts. For a time, we studied with a tribe of native Force wielders on a small swampy world somewhere in the outer rim. In truth, Brenquiss made a much better swamp witch than she ever would have a Jedi, so I bid her farewell and we parted ways as she remained with the tribe.
Now, I am called again to rejoin with some of my peers of the order on a small outpost where an ancient temple has been discovered. There are few of us here, which is good. This temple feels different from many of the others I have explored. It is important. It is clear that it was not ready for us before, but not it calls and must be heeded.
Patience
Patience is Merfi's longtime companion, having traveled with and protected his tiny Jedi ward for many years since he had first been discovered by Merfi during his wanderings among the talz on the world of Orto Plutonia.
