Card Deck Character Backgrounds

Connections

Connections between the characters are going to be important - they describe the ways in which the characters came together, and elements of their past. Of each pairing of characters, each player draws one card, and combines the two to form an interaction from their past.

  • Balance: You were dealing with a difficult decision you had to make.
  • Comet: You were in a hopeless, losing situation.
  • Donjon: You were imprisoned (either literally or simply trapped in some way).
  • Euryale: You were cursed or otherwise in a terrible situation that was not of your doing.
  • The Fates: You were trying to get what was owed to you.
  • Flames: You were intensely angry or jealous.
  • Fool: You were being terribly naive in some way.
  • Gem: You were in a situation dealing with a great deal of wealth.
  • Idiot: You were dealing with something in which you were ignorant.
  • Jester: You were dealing with a situation in which you didn't have all the information.
  • Key: You were in need of the right weapon.
  • Knight: You were in a violent situation.
  • Moon: You were in a spiritual or hopeful situation.
  • Rogue: You were dealing with an enemy you knew nothing about.
  • Ruin: You were dealing with great poverty.
  • Skull: You were dealing with a death.
  • Star: You were dealing with your greatest hope for the future.
  • Sun: You were dealing with unexpected or powerful magic.
  • Talons: You were dealing with the sudden loss of your greatest treasure.
  • Throne: You were in a position of power.
  • Vizier: You were dealing with a situation in which you were very knowledgeable.
  • The Void: You were in a very dark place.

Secrets

Being supremely shady sorts, the characters have secrets. Draw two cards, and answer the questions associated with that card.

  • Balance: You used to be someone that you are not any longer. Who was that? How might your old life impact your new one?
  • Comet: You wish to defeat and destroy someone. Who are they? How will pursuing them cause problems for you and your allies?
  • Donjon: You once served time imprisoned in a jail or as a slave. How did you get free? What problems did your time there or your escape cause you and your allies?
  • Euryale: You are under a curse. Where did the curse come from, and how do you get ride of it? What does it do to you?
  • The Fates: You know you have a punishment coming for something you did. What did you do? What is the punishment?
  • Flames: You have someone who tries to ruin your life every time they find you. Who are they? What do they want?
  • Fool: You know of someone that you have a secret about whom you could blackmail with it. Who are they? What is the secret?
  • Gem: You know of a great treasure or big haul. Why haven't you gotten it yet? Where is it?
  • Idiot: You did something stupid that could tarnish your reputation. What was it? What might happen if others find out?
  • Jester: You are secretly in love with someone. Who are they? Why haven't you confessed your feelings?
  • Key: You have a magic item that is dangerous to you in some way. What is the danger? How can you prevent the danger?
  • Knight: You once did something awful and violent. What did you do? What happens if it is discovered?
  • Moon: You have a secret wish. What is it? Why do you keep it a secret?
  • Rogue: You have an enemy. Who is it? Why are they dangerous?
  • Ruin: You come from a background of great poverty. What was that situation? Why do you keep it hidden?
  • Skull: You secretly killed someone once. Who was it? What happens if it is discovered you did it?
  • Star: You took advantage of someone innocent or trusting. What did you do? Why do you keep it a secret?
  • Sun: You have a magic item that you stole or took from someone by force. Who are they? What happens if they find you?
  • Talons: You are responsible for the destruction of something of value or worth to another. What did you destroy? What happens if they find you?
  • Throne: You stand to inherit some land or property of value. What is it? Why do you keep it a secret?
  • Vizier: You once gave someone guidance or advice that turned out tragically. What was it? Did you do it on purpose?
  • The Void: You have died before. What or who returned you to life? What do they want from you in return?

Contacts

Who you know is almost as important as what you do, for certain types of characters. Draw two cards; each one represents a contact that the character can call upon. You have a history with them, although they are not automatically allies, though they do each owe you a favor.

  • Balance: You know someone who is not what they claim to be. Who are they? Why do they owe you?
  • Comet: You know someone who hunts down others for a living. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Donjon: You know a jailer or dungeon-keeper of some kind. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Euryale: You know someone in a situation of great misfortune. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • The Fates: You know someone who can get you out of some kind of trouble. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Flames: You know someone associated with the infernal powers. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Fool: You know someone associated with the fey powers. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Gem: You know someone who is very wealthy. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Idiot: You know someone who does menial work but in a useful position. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Jester: You know an entertainer of some kind. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Key: You know someone that can get you access to some place. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Knight: You have a violent person who owes you a favor. Who are they? Why do they owe you?
  • Moon: You have a magical person who owes you a favor. Who are they? Why do they owe you?
  • Rogue: You know a criminal figure of some skill or notoriety. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Ruin: You know someone in great poverty but with useful skills or knowledge. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Skull: You know someone associated with necromantic or undead powers. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Star: You know someone with potent magical ability. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Sun: You know someone associated with religious powers or organizations. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Talons: You know a monster of some kind. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Throne: You know someone in a position of some political importance. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • Vizier: You know someone who is an important advisory position. Who are they? What do they owe you?
  • The Void: You know someone who kills for a living. Who are they? What do they owe you?
