The Crew

  • Captain: Leniel Vantus (Squirrel); big, bearded, classical sea captain look going on, usually quiet & solemn, a raving yelling madman when angered. Spends most of his time on the ship, where he is safe from having to interact with non-humans.
  • First Mate: Thudwik Vantus (Squirrel); Captain Leniel’s nephew, BIG perfect smile, blond, pretty, too pretty, knows he’s pretty, loves to love the lovely ladies, not too bright. Hates dwarves. Barron had to heal little Brook up after Thudwik had entered Ebenezer’s shop and attacked her on sight. He angrily stays on the ship now per the Captain’s command.
  • Second Mate/Bosun/Blacksmith: Timothy (Badger); smitten with Anala, he likes to be the “big boss bosun” when she’s around, giving “important” orders to the deckhands and others who answer to him, typically does all of the work that the Captain and First Mate should and they’re pretty content to let him, often called Badger-Turtle due to his choice of vocation and that his mother was a Turtle who worked in a forge. Hates dwarves. Also stays on the ship to avoid unsavory creatures.
  • Navigator/Helmsman/Scholar/Chronicler: Kershwin (Squirrel); young, intense and focused on his tasks, meditates a lot, antisocial, practices martial arts. He quietly keeps to himself most of the time, when he’s out and about in the town, he doesn’t seem affected by the nonhumans; he just notes them and ignores them just like he does the humans; only offering an acknowledging nod to everyone.
  • Cook/Doctor: Shalwin (Magpie); tiny old lady, twitchy/nervous, always looks shocked, drinks a lot, good cook, not the best doctor as is obvious by the frequently visible scars the crew has, knows a ton of history about Gir. If she’s racist she doesn’t show it - she acts as if she doesn’t see the difference from one species to another; has been witnessed dragging a dwarf and human child away by their ears while admonishing them for throwing sticks at a lizardfolk child as well as commissioning a portrait of herself from Brook for her son back home.
  • Gunner (although more just an “armsman” as they have no guns, but they stole the term from the Northern airships): Belgrand the Boar (Bear); almost as big as Larry, drinks a lot, loves fighting & fucking, men or women (in regards to both fighting & fucking), calls the ship’s one catapult his husband and the four ballista his wives. Doesn’t have the usual problem with dwarves that others do, but thinks all elves are schemers. “It’s in their souls!”
  • Shipwright/Quartermaster: Anala (Squirrel); short, pretty, darker skin (half Tissan), often sings when Pimwright plays his music, has slept with most of the crew, probably wants to sleep with you, it’s how she gets what she wants - being Empress of Gir would be quite nice. She wants that. Queen of Nir would be acceptable as well. Hates dwarves.
  • Deckhand/Lookout: Kim (Squirrel); young, hyper, curious - usually with her brother Jef. Afraid of nonhumans, but seems to be getting more comfortable with them during her time here.
  • Deckhand/Tailor/Barber: Larry (Fox); ogrekin, massive, bearded, long braided hair, not too bright, very trusting and friendly, close to his cousin Pimwright, surprisingly skilled with needle & thread as well as razor & scissors
  • Deckhand/Merchant/Spy/Musician: Pimwright (Fox); a short, bald, shaven rail thin man wearing a fez - friend to his cousin Larry, has traveled extensively within Ilren, Gir, Sedas, Hana and Kanith. Not particularly racist, but avoids interaction in order to not draw unwanted attention from his racist peers. Tries to extend this protection notion to Larry, but fails horribly as Larry seems absolutely smitten with the cornucopia of races that Ree is becoming.
  • Deckhand/Rigger/Cabin Boy: Jef (Squirrel); young, hyper, curious - usually with his sister Kim. Doesn’t like dwarves because it’s how he was raised, but his short time in Ree seems to be quickly undoing this parental damage.

Mallard Knights

Not part of the normal crew, here because of Aidan

  • Vols Kimbru; always seems deep in thought or angry, scowl seems permanently etched onto face, makes it clear he thinks they should return with Aidan to plan the recapturing of Gir, usually looks like he’d rather kill people than speak with them. Hates dwarves. He was involved in an attack on some Maintainers that were in Ree to make some repairs.
  • Dina Farell; laughs easily, lude, flirty, peers seem to think she doesn’t take things serious enough, has romantic history with Felwin, he can’t seem to stand her, has made numerous jokes about sealing off the District and letting the nasty little dwarves all starve to death - is dismissive if reproached, “I just don’t want those unwholesome fucks in my city, or any of these other monsters for that matter. And I assure you, I’m not the only one.” Was involved in the witch stabbing altercation.
  • Felwin Hasherel; quiet, serious about etiquette, dry & a bit dull - he’s the one Matilda had assigned to play honor guard for Aidan. He’s not expressed the distinct dislike for the nonhumans many of the others have, but they do seem to put him on edge a bit.
  • Bella Wont; stout as a dwarf, serious, dedicated to house and knightly honor. Was involved in an altercation with some of the local witches and stabbed two of them and was pretty severely burned in the fight. Has not spoken of it, but it’s clear she does not approve of the nonhumans in town.
  • Solan Pennywash; tall, pretty, rich, full of himself, rich, did I mention rich? I’m sure I did. Because he’s rich and wants you to know it. Because you’re not. But he is. Reacts to nonhumans as if they were covered in shit. “Iew. Don’t touch me. Iew! It looked at me with it’s soulless little eyes!” He was also involved in the witch stabbing incident and received quite a nasty hex from them resulting in boils.

Other Ship Guests

  • Lord Solis (Owl); always dressed in the richest of scholarly attire with a journal & pen in hand, he represents a group of Owls who wish to aid in the removal of the High Commander and reinstatement of....Aidan..../sniff/ as Emperor...although he makes it clear that the PLAN, masterfully created and perfected, was to put one of the Magpie on the throne. Until recent events following a drunken bard’s tavern song DERAILED this perfect plan. But yes, it’s good to have the (CRAZY) bloodline of the proper (AND CRAZY) Imperial line alive and (crazy) well. Goodie. /golf clap/ Swell. He is very concerned about Aidan’s fondness for his...”pets”, but stresses that letting such creatures into Gir would certainly derail his authority and cause even further unrest. So...just to assure your people, we’re NOT letting these things into Gir. Right? Right??
  • Lady Brittany (Owl); Lord Solis’ daughter, who would make a most wonderful Empress. Was betrothed to a Magpie boy, who would have probably been Emperor after High Command fell...if Aidan hadn’t ruined, no - I mean, changed things for the better! Yes. better.... She would still make a most appropriate Empress and what better way to seal the Owls to the Crows than matrimony? Brittany is very pretty. And very, very stupid.
  • Adalia & Enno (no house); siblings, they are servants to Lord Solis & Lady Brittany, they’re practically mute, perfect little servants, they only speak if their masters tell them to, never make eye contact with anyone, and seem to practice invisibility
  • Owen, Godspriest of Karas (Hound); serious when performing rite & ritual, not very serious otherwise, loves “his” ship, he is the voice of Karas in Gir (impressive given that Karas worship is illegal in Gir, he has connections) and the Church representative for the House of Squirrels, who deemed and assured the Church of Gir (and thus back to the Lance) that the ship was NOT technology...nope, not at all - just a really big magic item...even though it kinda sorta is... As a priest of Karas, the only god to not condemn magi-tech, the Squirrels felt he their best likely ally to get the ships approved by the Church. Owen has visited both the Lance and Obsidian. He carries a “magic wand of wounding that just happens to be pistol-shaped” - most of the other Godpriests in Gir are not very fond of him and believe he and the Squirrels and their godless ships should be burned. But he’s thus far followed all proper channels, bluffed and bribed them at every diplomatic turn to keep them away from the ships. He seems perfectly at ease with nonhumans - anyone who has visited Obsidian would have to be.
  • Lady Ansela Miru (Mallard); sexy, slim, wears finery & gowns that appear to be painted onto her. She is single and a virgin who just needs a good husband to produce heirs to. She was sent as representative from House Mallard to the Imperial Prince Aidan of the House of Crows, she is proper, bows perfectly & properly, uses all the right words & courtesies, the Mallard Knights attend and treat her as if she were a goddess manifest. She is courteous to all of Aidan’s friends, but you pick up that it is not sincere when it comes to, well everyone. Especially the non-humans. Although she seems genuinely enchanted with hobbits. “They’re like giant, wonderful chubby babies!”
  • Ulrica (no house); Lady Ansela’s servant, a feral looking young woman that seems ill fitting to the fine servants clothes Lady Ansela makes her wear. Her eyes are amber and she moves or is able to stay perfectly still with the grace of an animal. The Lady found her as a baby on a riverbank on one of her rides & decided to keep her. Raised by the Lady and her servant women, Ulrica is unruly and a terrible servant, but the Lady is very fond of her regardless. The girl is said to also be bodyguard, spy & assassin for her lady. She seems more curious about the nonhumans of Ree than hostile.
  • Thistle (no house); Lady Ansela’s other servant, a tiny young girl, quiet with big almost chibi eyes, she always looks ready to tear up, she is constantly moving, cleaning, polishing, fetching things, putting things away, straightening her Lady’s clothes, straightening her own clothes - anytime she is supposed to stay still, she fidgets and looks like she is preparing to explode with unspent motivation. She squeaks anytime she sees a nonhuman and looks ready to cry, except for elves which she nearly swoons with dreamy eyes each time she sees them.
