Tradition Skills

  • Academics: An understanding of history is a strong part of voudoun training - understanding the past is vital to understanding why some practices are in place. Likewise, a good voudisant combines knowledge of Catholic religion and original African beliefs into a uniquely syncretic whole.
  • Crafts: A large part of voudoun involves the creation of objects and small handicrafts as part of its rites. These are invariably made from simple and cheap components, such as the govi spirit bottle, the simple pole and altar of the hounfour temple space and simply sewn-and-painted flags and banners.
  • Expression: Dance, song and prayer are tremendously important aspects of voudoun. Its practitioners seek ecstatic trance states brought on by these practices, in order to let the mait tete come forth.
  • Occult: The correspondences of sacrifice and sympathy make up the lores of voudoun, as well as the properties of each of the lwa.
  • Streetwise: Voudoun is remarkably earthy, sprung up as it did in the midst of slavery and poverty. Cast-aside bottles form the basis for its sacred vessels, old abandoned buildings are its temples and the smell of cheap booze, simple food and gunpowder are its sacraments.
